Managing Editor – Adult Non-Fiction
The Opportunity
Bloomsbury Publishing Plc is a leading international publisher with strengths in trade, children’s, professional and academic publishing, both digitally and in print.
We are currently looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and hardworking Managing Editor to provide support to the Publishing Director and Commissioning Editor for Bloomsbury Publishing Ventures, part of our Adult division. The successful candidate will be managing a number of books through the editorial process from manuscript delivery and cover design through to publication, and requires working with authors, agents, institutions, freelancers, illustrators and in-house colleagues.
The list includes large, illustrated arts books as well as narrative text titles across a variety of imprints, including Bloomsbury Caraval, Herbert Press, Philip Wilson Publishers and Tauris Parke.
The successful candidate will join a friendly team based in our Oxford offices.
The Role
To assist in the effective management of print and digital products throughout the publication process. This includes:
Project-managing titles through the editorial process from handover by the Commissioning Editor through to final files to Production ∙
Balancing quality, time and cost ∙
Briefing and managing freelancers and in-house colleagues ∙
Building strong working relationships with authors, freelancers and agents ∙
Writing Advance Information sheets, and catalogue and jacket copy ∙
Briefing jacket and page designs ∙
Maintaining in-house systems including Biblio and FocalPoint
Attending industry events
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Substantial Editorial experience in book publishing ∙
Meticulous attention to detail ∙
First-rate oral and written communication skills ∙
Excellent proofreading and copy-editing skills ∙
Ability to write strong sales copy and blurbs ∙
Ability to prioritise and use own initiative, juggling several projects at one time
Solid time-management skills to cope with competing deadlines
Highly organised, methodical – a calm, capable and experienced project manager ∙
Understands both colour and mono production processes and has experience of highly integrated titles
Knowledge of typesetting and typography and an eye for design ∙
Experience with Biblio, FocalPoint, Word, InDesign and Photoshop an advantage
Reporting to the Publishing Director, this role is a full-time permanent position, based at Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Kemp House, Chawley Park, Cumnor Hill, Oxford OX2 9PH. Bloomsbury Publishing offers a competitive salary, great development prospects and generous staff discounts.
