About the Job

Would you like to be involved in the production of children’s books? Can you guide a team of illustrators to produce bestselling books? If so, we want to hear from you!
Sweet Cherry Publishing is an independent children’s publisher based in Leicester. We are now looking for an entry-level Design Assistant to join our team.
You will be a graduate with a desire to work in publishing and preferably will come from creative background. You will assist the Designer by discussing creative solutions, communicating with illustrators, and managing files to send to print. You will be able to demonstrate good skills in the Adobe Creative Suite and an understanding of the children’s book industry. You will have excellent organisational skills and a positive work ethic.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Liaising with the editorial department and creating illustration plans for illustrators
Briefing and designing book covers
Typesetting books and ensuring consistency of layout and style
Creating illustration briefs
Sending feedback to and managing freelance illustrators via phone and email
Liaising with the sales and marketing departments and ensuring that their Advance Information sheets and other promotional material is always up to date
Making corrections to InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator files
Proofing artwork and final files
Progress chasing all files, refined files and approvals
Ensuring all files adhere to the necessary printing guidelines
Reporting progress to your Manager
Key Skills:
Adobe Creative Suite (competent in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign)
Confident design skills
Ability to provide feedback and direct illustrators on projects
Time management: ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
Confident communicator with an ability to liaise with colleagues at all levels
Meticulous attention to detail
Confidence in a highly creative environment
Ability to work as part of a small, but friendly team
Excellent personal organisation
Problem solving capabilities
Willingness to learn
Appreciation of all things literature!
Experience in a publishing or design environment
Illustration skills
Experience communicating with third parties
Editorial and proofreading experience
Understanding of the printing process
Exceptional spelling and grammar
