Editorial Assistant, Digital Resources
The opportunity
We have an exciting position for a strong communicator with administrative experience and some exposure to academic publishing to join Bloomsbury’s Digital Resources Division at a time of growth. The role is largely administrative and editorial in nature and it offers a great opportunity to gain experience with digital products and business models, as well as a good foundation for a career in publishing.
Examples of our digital products that you will be supporting include the award-winning Bloomsbury Fashion Central and Drama Online, and the recently-launched Bloomsbury Cultural History and Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Philosophers.
The role
Support editorial signings by:
o Researching the potential for commissioning products in new areas
o Assisting in market research for product viability
o Researching content improvements to existing sites
o Editorial administration relating to New Product Development ∙
Identify existing book titles to be repurposed for digital products, creating and updating lists for products, identifying rights problems (including for images) and clearing ∙
Liaise with key stakeholders, both internal and external ∙
All administration to do with contracts: issuing, tracking, chasing ∙
Administration relating to new digital projects: contributor contracts, tracking, reminders, monitoring, liaison with external editorial advisors, and highlighting problem areas for manager intervention ∙
Point person for metadata system (Neptune) and contract tracking system (Librios) ∙
Point person for all Editorial metadata ∙
General support for commissioning function ∙
Assist in product testing ∙
Take and distribute minutes of departmental meetings ∙
Responsible for keeping the publishing programme on schedule through regular liaison with authors and contributors, and by maintaining and updating the submission schedule ∙
Prepare articles and updates for handover to production ∙
Set up submission schedule, tracks and updates ∙
Commission peer reviews for projects as requested and record the progress of all projects under review ∙
Prepare and send out contracts for new projects. Ensure signed contracts are returned and liaise with the royalty and accounts teams as appropriate ∙
Respond promptly and appropriately to external and internal inquiries ∙
Help with the implementation and piloting of new systems ∙
Provide basic reports and sales information using key systems (Biblio, Cognos, Neptune) ∙
Act as a product champion and project enthusiasm internally as well as externally ∙
Act as ambassador for Bloomsbury with external stakeholders e.g. academic authors, suppliers, editors etc. including conference representation where required
Skills, knowledge and experience
Solid administrative experience ∙
Knowledge or experience of academic publishing ∙
A demonstrable interest in digital publishing ∙
Excellent written and verbal communication skills including accurate spelling, grammar and punctuation and a good eye for detail ∙
Exceptional organisational, time management and prioritisation skills ∙
Experience of working on small and medium size projects ∙
A ‘can do’ attitude with a solutions approach ∙
An enthusiasm for tracking and reporting information ∙
Good people skills ∙
Calmness under pressure ∙
An ability to work well as part of a team
