Description: Kogan Page Ltd
London
Description: Kogan Page Ltd

About the Job

Kogan Page is the leading independent global publisher of business books and content with offices in London and New York. Our award-winning publishing from the world’s leading business experts offers books and digital solutions for professional practice and academic achievement. In 2019 Kogan Page was named 'Academic & Professional Publisher of the Year' at the IPG Independent Publishing Awards.
We are seeking a new Development Editor to work closely with authors and offer manuscript feedback on our growing Business, Finance and Risk list of professional and academic titles. This role would report to the Commissioning Editor in our Central London office but would also support our editorial team in the US, meaning the successful candidate would have the opportunity to develop an international perspective on the market.
This is an ideal opportunity for a current Editorial Assistant or similar looking to further their career in publishing and has potential to lead to the role of Commissioning Editor. Development Editors play an important role in our organization and have a lot of responsibility; managing projects independently and making a direct impact on the quality of our publishing, both through developing manuscripts and commissioning new editions of successful titles.
Key responsibilities:
Read draft manuscripts and provide detailed feedback for authors based on an understanding of target readership and market positioning.
Work closely with authors as their main editorial contact and develop good relationships to ensure books progress according to schedule and are handed over to production on time.
Research and commission new editions of key titles to meet your own signing target.
Manage the peer review process and undertake market research, and ensure proposals and manuscripts are optimized using these insights.
Maximise the commercial potential of each book by collaborating closely with sales, marketing and production colleagues.
Represent the company at conferences and events, meet regularly with authors, and present projects in internal meetings.
Experience / skills required:
Publishing experience in a books or journals environment.
Demonstrate the skills and correct instincts to develop draft manuscripts with authors and provide helpful feedback in line with the original brief.
Demonstrable ability to manage multiple projects and deliver them to agreed deadlines.
The ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide range of authors and other stakeholders.
Attention to detail.
Confident working independently and as part of a team.
Commercial acumen and knowledge of the publishing process.
Knowledge of business, finance and risk not necessary but a willingness to learn and follow new subject developments will be an advantage.
