SENIOR COMMISSIONING EDITOR/COMMISSIONING EDITOR – CLASSICS AND ARCHAEOLOGY - ACADEMIC DIVISION
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the development of Bloomsbury’s award-winning academic division. Classics and Archaeology is one of our fastest growing academic lists, publishing around 55 titles a year across the UK high-school and global higher-education markets. With particular strengths in the fields of ancient drama, classical reception and language teaching, the list also focuses on research monographs and student introductions in the field of archaeology and ancient history. Highlights of the past year include the prizewinning Londinium: A Biography by Richard Hingley and Fellini’s Eternal Rome by Alessandro Carrera.
We are seeking an experienced academic commissioning editor to cover a maternity leave and to continue the consistent growth enjoyed in recent years. Working with the support of an editorial assistant, you will expand our publishing in some of the aforementioned areas across a range of product lines (textbooks, monographs and reference) and play a key role in delivering our new digital product The Bloomsbury Classical Library. The role will report to our Editorial Director for Classics, Drama and Literary Studies.
•Strategic List Management: provides the strategic direction and is commercially responsible for Classics and Archaeology within Bloomsbury’s Academic division; gathers market knowledge to identify priority areas and product types for development and list growth
•Commissioning: commissions new book and digital content to meet market need, commissioning into the expanding Literary Studies Reference Handbook and Textbook lists and building on core monograph series and standalone titles in key strategic areas
•Analysis: monitors, reviews and analyses the performance of the list
•Representation: attendance at conferences in the UK and internationally, campus visits and sales conferences
•Interdepartmental Liaison: works closely with marketing, sales, production and digital teams; liaises with Bloomsbury’s US office and external stakeholders including the UK high-school exam board OCR
Skills, knowledge, experience
•Familiarity with the list’s subject areas a definite advantage, including a network of contacts
•Proactive, confident self-starter and a collaborative team player
•Creative and commercial approach to list development, management and commissioning
•Strong analytic and financial skills and a competent user of publishing software systems
•Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing and verbally
•Positive outlook, strong problem-solving, organisational and time-management skills
•Meticulous attention to detail
