1 What’s your company called?

Magnum Book Services.

2 What services or products do you offer?

We provide global shipping services by air and ocean to meet the needs of the small to medium sized publisher. It creates a global linking from publishers to printers and distributors.

3 How can you help IPG members?

With our industry knowledge of shipping and publishing we can provide service solutions at a level that assists small to medium sized publishers. Over the 25 years that we have been involved with the publishing business we have come to learn the needs and requirements of publishers and their order fulfilment. We provide an all-encompassing and worry-free service for publishers who do not have the time, knowledge or manpower to weave their own path through the dark art of shipping terminology.

4 What do you enjoy about working in publishing?

Having worked in the shipping industry for more than 30 years, I [Colin Wilson] happened to stumble across several publishing clients during my earlier formative years. Their gratitude for solving their shipping issues was reward enough for me to see a gap in the market. We have since built a client base of 600-plus publishers, and the reward and gratitude continues to this day. The philosophy at Magnum Book Services is one of assistance and service.

5 What do you think is the single biggest opportunity and the single biggest threat for independent publishers right now?

From our perspective, the uncertainty that exists in the shipping process causes publishers anxiety, and shipping rates have proved to be volatile and affected by exchange rates fluctuations. We now have the added uncertainty of how we access the EU market post Brexit. Will this bring further restrictions to European sales?

6 What do you get out of belonging to the IPG?

The IPG is tailored to the needs of small to medium sized publishers, and therefore keeps us in touch with many of our clients. Like the IPG’s publishing members we use the shared knowledge and collective member areas for book fairs arrangements. Being an IPG member has allowed us to participate in more book fairs than in the past.
