1 What's your company called?
Compass Independent Publishing Services.
2 What services or products do you offer?
Compass sells titles from a range of small to medium sized publishers into bookshops, library suppliers, wholesalers, supermarkets and multiples, across the entire UK and Irish markets. We carry a variety of lists, from cookery to children’s; literary to lifestyle; poetry to politics! We also offer a dedicated academic sales operation in the UK and Irish markets.
3 How can you help IPG members?
Our aim is to work with publishers who have a clear focus for their business and want to build a strong, ongoing relationship with us. We provide sales and marketing for publishers who want have a strong presence in the UK market, but who don’t have sufficient resources in-house to take this on themselves.
4 What do you enjoy about working in publishing?
Every day is different! The sheer range of books that Compass represent means we are always challenged to ensure that every title reaches its full potential. Our client publishers are good friends, and I thoroughly enjoy strategizing with them to achieve the best for every book.
5 What do you think is the single biggest opportunity and the single biggest threat for independent publishers right now?
It can be tricky for small publishers to get their titles into bookshops—they need to ensure that everything they publish is truly worth publishing so that booksellers can genuinely believe their lists will sell. They will never have the mega-bucks to spend on marketing that the big boys do, so they need to concentrate on high quality books and then provide as much PR and publicity for them as they can. A threat is a lack of attention to detail in the provision of materials to the sales team!
