1 What’s your company called?

Austin Macauley Publishers.

2 What do you publish?

Anything from celebrity memoirs and self-help guides to beautifully illustrated children’s books and hard-hitting crime fiction. It’s the variety that keeps things interesting here.

3 What's the story of the company?

We were founded in 2006 after we saw a gap in the market for a more open-minded publishing house. The rise of self-publishing was beginning to shake up an industry primarily dominated by bigger publishers. Realising the amount of hidden talent out there, but also understanding that with many writers hesitant to take the DIY approach there was still a need for a publisher’s expertise and guidance, Austin Macauley was born.

4 How's business?

Busy! We are currently focusing on expanding our presence in the US market, and it’s a really exciting time for us.

5 What do you enjoy about being independent?

The freedom. As an independent publisher we aren’t bound by staid practices. We think laterally and as a company we are continually evolving. We don’t just adapt to accommodate changes within the publishing industry—we actively anticipate them.

6 What is the biggest single issue in publishing right now?

I’d say piracy. It’s time-consuming to combat, and incredibly frustrating for authors to see their work devalued in that way. Luckily there are some great services out there looking to offer readers a viable alternative to illegal downloads.

7 What one piece of advice would you give to a fellow independent just starting out?

Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things. It’s a competitive industry and you’ll need to carve your niche.

8 What do you get out of belonging to the IPG?

The IPG offers such a valuable service that we only regret not joining sooner! With such a wealth of information on offer across a broad range of subjects, from marketing suggestions to legal advice, we’d struggle without you!
