1 What's your company called?

2 What do you publish? is a leading careers information and development website publishing books and other careers-based resources. Our books include How to Become a Firefighter, How to Become Cabin Crew and How to Become a Social Worker. We also publish series of psychometric and numerical reasoning tests, and various educational assessment books which are made widely available to schools and universities.

3 What's the story of the company?

How2Become was founded by Richard McMunn, who was working as a fire officer for Kent Fire & Rescue Service at the time. Since the company started it has grown into a team of enthusiastic writers, course tutors and publishing experts. Along the way, we have received recognition by reaching the final of the HSBC Start Up Stars competition and the National Online Recruitment Awards. We are also very proud to have been nominated for a number of IPG Independent Publishing Awards including the newcomer, specialist consumer and digital marketing categories. How2Become aims to provide the latest recruitment information to help people prepare effectively for any career-related selection process.

4 How's business?

We are currently experiencing our best financial year ever and our website now receives in excess of 5,000 visitors per day. Digital marketing is one of our key strengths and something that we very much enjoy developing.

5 What do you enjoy about being independent?

Independence gives us the freedom to develop quickly and also test new digital marketing strategies in a fast and efficient manner. We enjoy having total control over our publishing model.

6 What is the biggest single issue in publishing right now?

Perhaps the biggest issue is the fact that we need to constantly assess and change our publishing model, in order to meet the rapidly changing demands of the consumer.

7 What one piece of advice would you give to a fellow independent just starting out?

Try as hard as you can to increase sales on your own website, and not just on Amazon. This will allow you to remain profitable and will also give you much needed cash flow in the early days. Over 60% of our sales come from our website, which allows us to continually develop and publish new titles quickly.

8 What do you get out of belonging to the IPG?

The IPG provides a sense of community and reassures us that we are not alone as publishers. We also get to learn new things on a regular basis and make contact with people we wouldn't normally get to meet. Finally, whenever we have needed support, the IPG team are always on hand to assist us.
