1 What's your company called?
Zebralution. We are a digital distributor that offers publishers the chance to gain additional revenue by placing their audiobooks at the heart of music streaming services. Zebralution are the streaming market leader in Germany, generating a seven-digit revenue figure for our established German publishers with millions of daily streams. Besides distributing to Napster, Apple Music, Deezer, Spotify, YouTube Music and Google Play, we also deliver to book-centric services such as Storytel, Bookbeat and Overdrive and are a preferred distributor for Apple Books.
2 What services or products do you offer?
We introduce audiobooks to new listeners using our unique set of marketing tools. They include:
In-house curated playlists and profiles within Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music (GSA only). Our audiobook profile with Spotify currently has over 300,000 playlist followers. As well as genres, it includes categories such as new Audiobooks, Bestsellers and Audiobook of the Week.
Spooks—the audiobook search engine app. With over 300,000 downloads to date, the free app shows the audiobooks which are available on Spotify Premium. The app works on both iOS and Android and
allows people to browse through various genre categories and recommendations, offering short synopsis, bookmarks and soon an in-app player option.
Spooks Voice Skill plays audiobooks on the Alexa smart speaker. Spotify Premium users can listen to full audiobooks, and even without Spotify access the skill will allow you to access previews and descriptions.
Audiobook Analytics, which examines large amounts of data to uncover hidden patterns, correlations and other insights into audiobook listeners on music streaming services. The service gives publishers access to detailed data on the performance of their audiobooks and breaks down listener age groups, gender, location, device type, operating system and completion rate.
The Spooks YouTube channel, which features audiobook teasers to drive traffic to the correct monetized channels. Our anti-piracy service claims or blocks user-generated content on behalf of publishers.
3 How can you help IPG members?
Content is king but distribution is the queen… it’s all about availability and discoverability. We introduce audiobooks to new listeners, covering all music streaming platforms worldwide—a potential reach of more than 250 million users.
4 What do you enjoy about working in publishing?
We love audiobooks and we want more people to enjoy them! It’s amazing to be able to work with a creative product and to ensure it actually gets listened to by as many people as possible, just as the author intended.
5 What do you think is the single biggest opportunity and the single biggest threat for independent publishers right now?
The biggest opportunity in audiobook publishing is distribution. We live in a time-poor society where people have rich pickings when it comes to content consumption, so making audiobooks easily available on a variety of platforms is essential. This thought was echoed by Tom Webster, senior vice president of Edison Research, who told the Audiobook Publishing Association Conference in New York last week to “Go where the people are.”
The biggest threat to audiobook publishing is the lack of usable data. Not knowing the audience you are providing a product for can be a risky business, which is why we developed Audiobook Analytics. It gives publishers the knowledge they need to stay agile and competitive.
6 What do you want to get out of belonging to the IPG?
We want to connect with publishers big and small and offer them the opportunity to gain additional revenue. If you would like more information about our digital exploitation strategies and B2B services then please do get in touch.
