Library supply
Some retailers specialise in selling books to libraries, and are called library suppliers. They will often have contracts with public, academic and corporate libraries, and undertake various services for their clients.
Remainders
Books that have not sold as fast, or as many copies, as forecast are sometimes sold off by a publisher at a knock down price.
Exporting
There are seven methods of selling books overseas.
Selling to shops
There are over 4000 bookshops in the UK, made up from ‘independents’ and branches of the ‘chains’, such as W.H. Smith, Waterstone’s, Blackwells, Borders and Ottakar’s. Even large bookshops only stock a small proportion of all the books that are in print at any one time.
Sales Reps
In the UK reps are divided into three generic groups:
* Trade reps
* Academic reps
* Educational/school reps
