For authors
|
Most of the information we provide is for publishers, rather than authors. We receive a significant number of e-mail and telephone enquiries from prospective authors seeking publishers and other advice, and it can be difficult for us to deal with these enquiries within the resources we have available.
Manuscripts/ publishing proposals
The IPG does not accept manuscripts or publishing proposals. If you wish to approach IPG publishers direct, the members list on this site is searchable by generalised subject categories. Many publishers have websites giving prospective authors submission guidelines (instructions for how the publisher likes to receive publishing proposals, synopses and/ or sample chapters).
Relevant organisations and publications
If you are an author trying to get published for the first time, or trying to find a new publisher there are a number of useful organisations and publications available to you, most of which are listed on Booktrust’s website. (Booktrust is an independent, educational charity founded in 1926 with he mission to bring books and people together). Their fact sheet for authors seeking publishers or authors considering self-publishing is very comprehensive.
While individual publishers’ websites often give information about how to submit proposals, there are a number of publications which put much of this information in one place. For information about how to submit proposals to publishers, the Writers Handbook (published by Macmillan) and the Writers and Artists Yearbook (published by A&C Black) both contain listings of publishers and other useful information. IPG member Allison & Busby also publishes a number of useful Writers Guides.

The Society of Authors exists to promote the interests of authors. Membership is very reasonably priced and the Society offers a number of useful services to members, such as advice on contracts. It also has a number of information sheets available at low-cost to non-members.

The Writers Guild is another professional organisation for writers, and they share a common web address with the Society of Authors.
Finding Poetry Publishers
Follow the link below for a separate entry on Finding Poetry Publishers.
Self-Publishing
If you are an author considering self-publishing, see our entry on self-publishing. A useful website for self-publishers, supported in part by the Arts Council of England, is www.author.co.uk. This site is packed with articles and information from people involved in self-publishing. You may also find the Booktrust website referred to above useful. IPG membership tends to be more useful to those self-publishers who are actively seeking to build a commercial list, rather than those whose book publishing activity is one-off or very much ad hoc.
