3 How can you help IPG members?
Our direct to consumer solutions cater for publishers of all sizes and genres—from those looking to simply bolt on an ebookstore to their existing website (Firsty Express), to those looking to redesign their site with integrated ecommerce, and then top end—adding subscription modules, automating print fulfilment, handling ONIX feeds, affiliate opportunities and much more. We've worked with a good number of IPG members already—from website projects to apps to digital software services—and our footprint is firmly established within the industry.
4 What do you enjoy about working in publishing?
The industry is constantly in flux, and it’s exciting to be at the forefront of technological change. The people who work in this business must make it one of the friendliest and most sociable industries to be in, and working in a small, agile team on the digital side has really enabled us to meet people from across the sector.
5 What do you think is the single biggest opportunity and the single biggest threat for independent publishers right now?
Biggest opportunity? Big data. For us, this is our raison d’être. Publishers absolutely need to start understanding more about the people who read and study their publications—and the opportunities to improve relationships through ecommerce and social media, amongst others, are clear. We’re seeing a significant rise in requests for new customer-facing publishing sites with integrated ecommerce, and the long-term upsell, gamification and other opportunities that will emerge—based on better user data—are self-evident. Biggest threat? Focus. We all know we’re working in an industry experiencing significant disruption. The difficulty for many in the industry is knowing which horse to back—and when to invest.
6 What do you get out of belonging to the IPG?
The opportunity to chat and mix with people in publishing from many different sectors—academic, trade, educational, STM—to supply chains, digital innovators and developers.
